Speaker: Dennis Schatz

Dennis Schatz co-authored the NSTA Press books, Solar Science and When the Sun Goes Dark, key resources for educators during the 2017 total solar eclipse. He is a recent Past President of NSTA and is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Learning Innovation.  He is the author of 23 science books for children that have sold almost 2 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 23 languages. He has received NSTA’s Distinguished Informal Science Educator Award, its Distinguished Service to Science Education Award, its Faraday Award for excellence in science communication and most recently the Robert H. Carlton Lifetime Achievement award.  He has an asteroid named for him in honor of his contributions to the public understanding of science.

Conference Strands: 

  1. Leveraging Assessment  

  • Assessment as a way to show evidence of students’ varied strengths and gifts
  • Making a product and demonstrating knowledge via means other than tests, such as presentations, posters, models, etc.
  • Preference will be given to proposals that share rubric(s) or other grading criteria

2. Developing Inclusive, Diverse, Equitable and Supportive Classrooms

  • Best practices and inclusive strategies for reaching ALL learners in ways that are equitable and affirming

  • Social-Emotional Learning activities

  • Preference will be given to proposals that describe how barriers to learning are removed for learners

3. Inspiring Instruction 

  • Inventive ways of implementing Three Dimensional Teaching in science and Process Standards in mathematics
  • Strategies that encourage curiosity and discovery in learners (phenomena, projects, problems, etc.)
  • Preference will be given to proposals that include plans for complete lessons or units that teachers have actually run in their classrooms

4. “To Boldly Go”...

  • Encouraging students to think about space, exploration of our universe, and eclipses

  • How can we use earth/space based phenomena to excite and engage students?

  • Teaching earth/space based learning within the NGSS framework

5. Science & STEM Literacy

    • How literacy and science/STEM work together to cultivate science/STEM literate students

    • Presenters will share specific resources (books, websites, articles, blogs, etc) that they have used in their classroom

    • Teaching students how to read/write and use primary sources


Field Trips

February 19th  - CADAVER LAB EXPERIENCE 3-5pm

This gross anatomy lab experience plans to begin with an introduction to cadaveric gross anatomy and covers the history of cadaveric dissection. The tour will allow you to learn more about how medical schools obtain cadavers and how they are used to educate physicians and other healthcare professionals. Following the introductory talk, you have an opportunity to work through a series of cadaveric activity stations in the gross lab. Each station emphasizes a different part of the human anatomy, including the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system and digestive system. You will then have an opportunity to interact and engage with cadaveric specimens following the guidance and instruction of our medical educators and education graduate students.

February 19th - Indianapolis Zoo Tour 9-12

Would you like to know more about what goes on behind the scenes at the Zoo? Spend time with zoo professionals learning about what it takes to care for and run a zoo. Will we take you on a special behind the scenes tour, explore some of the Zoo's animals and show you how you can use the Zoo to inspire student learning.

February 20th  - Children's Museum Tour 9-12

Join a Children’s Museum science educator for a fun-filled morning of solar science! On April 8th, 2024, Indianapolis will experience its first total eclipse in nearly a millennium. Come prepare with us! Explore the orbits of the sun and moon, learn why eclipses happen, and even make some observations of the sun.

Location:  The Children's Museum of Indianapolis

WHOVA is back

The HASTI program will be available through an online mobile app - WHOVA.  This format is available to those who register for the conference.  Features include providing evaluations to presentations, PCP credentials, networking with presenters, attendees, and vendors.  With the usage of Whova there will be NO printed program.

HASTI Meals 

Included with conference registration is a lunch for both Monday and Tuesday.  The planning committee recognized that there are special needs for our attendees.  If you require a special lunch that is not listed on the registration form please contact the Registration Manager with your request.  Pre-registration guarantees meals for the conference.  Onsite registration does not include meals.

Refund Policy

Conference registration is non-refundable after February 12, 2024


HASTI Member Discounts


HASTI members are eligible for discounted conference rates. Member dues are $30 for teachers and industry professionals, $15 for college students and retirees.  You must be a paid current/active member when registering for the conference to receive the member rate. Therefore, if you are a member with a lapsed or overdue membership and wishing to attend the conference at the discounted rate, you will need to renew and pay your membership prior to registration.


College Student and Beginning Teachers Conference Scholarship 

Application for the College Student  and Beginning Teacher Conference Scholarship to attend the 2024 HASTI conference is now open.  Conference fees will need to be paid first.  Those receiving scholarships will submit an invoice and report to receive reimbursement.


Payment 

Payment is expected once registration is completed online.  Payment completes registration.  Payment is made either through credit card, check or an approved purchase order.

Purchase Orders

Purchase orders will be accepted.  A copy of the signed purchase order including the correct amount approved and the list of teachers attending the conference can be either mailed or emailed into the Registration Manager.   Payment is expected prior to the conference.
