The Gene Stratton-Porter Environmental Science Award
The Gene Stratton-Porter Environmental Science Award is given annually to an Indiana science teacher who exemplifies the spirit of the great Hoosier naturalist and author, Gene Stratton-Porter. The candidate exemplifies curiosity, independence, love of nature, and appreciation of the importance of science and the natural world.
The cash award of $500 is given in memory of Evelyn Garvin McCabe, who was a devoted fan of Gene Stratton-Porter. The awardee will also be given a one year HASTI membership.
Candidates may be nominated by both HASTI members and non-members. The candidate may, but is not required to be a current HASTI member.
Candidates should be full-time certified K--12 classroom teachers or informal science educators in the state of Indiana.
HASTI recognizes outstanding Hoosier science educators who are innovators in their classrooms. All recipients will be recognized at the HASTI Annual State Conference at the Awards Banquet in February 2020.

Submit the following sections using either Word Document or PDF to the Awards Manager (AwardsManager@hasti.org)
Section 2 -
Section 3 - Lesson/Unit Plan.
- NOminees must submit an innovative, replicable project, lesson plan, and/or curriculum scope and sequence that brings attention to Indiana’s natural ecosystems and the importance of those ecosystems to local environments. The entry should have been either developed or implemented in the prior year. The winning entry will be published in the Hoosier Science Teacher and made available on the HASTI.org website as a pdf for teacher access and dissemination.
Section 3 – Vita
This section incudes the nominee’s brief work history, honors or recognition received, or examples of leadership within profession, professional activities, and publications.
Section 4 - Photo
Include one photo of the nominee. This photo will be used for publicity should the nominee be selected as the awardee.
Section 5 – Two letters of support from supervisors, or colleagues describing how the candidate exemplifies the qualities in the description of the award.
Support letters are limited to one single spaced, typed page.
